Trained today at Crull Fitness. Luckily the soreness I felt after my workout on Monday & Tuesday is just a memory. However, I have no doubt that Julian will come up with some more new exercises to waken other muscles that are, no doubt, still on hiatus.

Wednesday, February 25th
Walked to the main US Post Office to mail letters for the American Heart Association fundraiser. Also walked in the neighborhood. It was pretty hot today, low 80's with no clouds and bright sun. In looking around as I walked, I noticed that the trees have budded and tulips are blooming. Yes, Spring is trying is darndest to make an early entrance. But, we must remember that it is still February and us locals know that the weather can be fickle and change in an instant.
I must admit that by mile 6, my feet started talking to me ... probably from the sneakers I had on without my thick pair of Thorlos socks on. I used Thorlos for my Breast Cancer 3 Day training and they really work well. I must make a note to get a few more pairs of Thorlos socks soon...

Yep, just as I predicted, I woke up sore from yesterday's workout... legs and butt muscles mostly... When I sit for a while and then try to get up, I can feel the silent screeching of my muscles (that would rather be left alone!) Went ahead and met Janie at Crull Fitness anyway. I asked Julian our personal trainer how may muscles there are in the human body and he just smiled and said "I'll get back to you on that". Well, I surfed the "net" and read that there are somewhere between 650 and 850, depending on the definition of a muscle. I hesitate to tell Julian that as he will probably find a way for Jane and I to work every single one!

Monday, February 23rd
First day back at Crull Fitness since returning from my wonderful trip in Palm Springs, California. Julian made sure I got back to work training quick. I bet I'll be feeling a just a wee bit sore in the morning.

Thursday, February 19th
This morning we checked out of the Spa Resort & Casino in downtown Palm Springs and headed back to our condo. On the way, on Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, right next to city hall, is a Cancer Survivor's Park. As a survivor of multiple cancers including breast cancer, I am at a loss for words to tell you what I felt as I explored the park. There are three main elements to the park. The first is the huge sculpture of a cancer patient's journey and it is titled "Cancer...there's hope".

The second element in the park is a "Positive Mental Attitude Walk". This is an area that a person can stroll through, meditate and read some 14 plaques; 4 are inspirational and 10 are specific suggestions on fighting cancer.

The third factor is a "Road to Recovery" with seven plaques explaining what cancer is and basic actions to successfully overcome the disease.

Also, there is a serene waterfall and also a pond with yet another sculpture. Here is a link to the main site, just click on the Cancer Survivors Park link on the left side of the main page: http://www.blochcancer.org/

After we arrived back at our condo, I decided to take a long 12 mile walk today since we fly back home tomorrow.... hate to leave this gorgeous place. I walked to Trader's Joe's and back and then took a final hike around the resort. I had to laugh as during my walk, three different cars with teenage boys honked and yelled at me. You have to know that seeing me from behind (at 35 or 40 m.p.h., they must have thought I was some hot young babe. Bet they got a shock to realize I was a gray headed grandma! ha. It did made me feel young again for an instant though. Got back to our condo in time to make a farewell dinner of Beef Bourguignon for the three of us. I decided to finish the trip off with a dessert of homemade crepes filled with baked apples.... mmmmmmm.

Mary treated us to two nights at the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Springs, so we left our condo after lunch and headed off on a new adventure. A trip within a trip... how cool is that? Anyway, I got up this morning and went to the Fitness Center here at the Spa Resort Casino for a 9:00 a.m. class called "Bounce & Buff". I was surprised at the number of women in the class... maybe 20 or more. I have to say I really enjoyed the cardio as well as working with hand weights on the exercise ball. Now, if I can only remember what I did so I can repeat it back at home! For dinner, I made an artichoke chicken with capers recipe. Hit the spot for all of three of us. I guess I should tell you that since I am dairy and gluten intolerant (and I love to cook), I find it easier to just cook at home when I can. Often, when I do go out, I usually end up with a dried out chicken breast with no seasoning and a salad with no dressing. Most restaurants just don't get it.

Tuesday, February 17th
Woke up to the threat of rain today. So, instead of a long distance training walk, I opted to walk to the Fitness Center and work out. I had brought a resistance band with me from home and after using it, a lady in the club asked about it and I let her borrow it. These bands are really excellent for leg exercises. This is sort of the method I use (exept I bend at my knees and also walk on my tip toes which makes it harder). I found this video on Youtube.. it claims to help your golf game. That would be great, except I don't play golf, ha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uoVD8IEgiw So, why don't you just run out and buy one and give the "monster"walk a go!

We arrived in downright breathtaking Palm Springs, California for our "girlfriend get-away" yesterday. Palm Springs, California in February is darn near perfect. It is in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. Warm sun with bright blue skies and cotton ball clouds... and just about everywhere you look, you are greeted by rainbows of blooming plants.
While Jane and Mary went to play golf, I decided to get out and log some good miles. So, I loaded up my backsack with water and snacks and headed out. Glorious weather and walking around all this beauty made me feel extra glad to be alive! Ended up walking 12 miles today... not too shabby.

Went to Crull Fitness this a.m. and had a good workout. Julian gave Janie and I some more new exercises to do both with weights and with the resistance band. I am really starting to feel and see results from all this work, yeah!

Wednesday, February 11th
Took a 5 mile hike today and it felt wonderful. Not one single ache, muscle strain, pain or even fatigue. It was about as stressful as getting off the sofa and walking to the fridge... Training really pays off big!

Healthy Idea: Try Tulsi Tea... I have become a great fan of this tea. It is simply delicious. And, what are the benefits? Well, let me count the ways: supports immune system, promotes healthy metabolism, helps with digestion and gastrointestinal issues, relieves inflammation, neutralizes biochemicals that contribute to cancer, degenerative diseases and premature aging and on and on. Here's a good link: http://organicindia.mercola.com/tulsi.aspx And, you can buy this at Natural Grocers or Whole Foods. There are several flavors, but I like the Original the best. It is caffeine free and tastes terrific. Give it a go.... nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Met Janie at Crull Fitness this morning. Used two new-to-me machines for arm muscles and also learned a few new exercises to strengthen leg muscles and abs. And, I bought a resistance exercise band to continue "monster walks" on my upcoming trip. Did I mention I am going to Palm Springs with "the girls"? Mary is an amazing, energetic and generous friend who has a timeshare and she asked me to tag along for a week. How could I resist? And, another of my pals I travel and hang out with Jane is going too. While the girls go off to play golf, I'm going to try to get some 12-15 mile walks in as long as the weather cooperates.

I have yet another person who is supporting me in this crusade against breast cancer and that is Louis Murad of Murad Auctions. Louis is a terrific person that I've gotten to know over the past 3 or 4 years through my work with the annual gala for The Network of Community Ministries. Louis is quite the auctioneer that makes our fundraising efforts a great success.

Healthy Ideas: Ditch the Splenda. Really. I have been reading about the evils of this stuff for a long time now. Here's a good link to read up on it: www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com Side effects can include: gastrointestinal problems, migraines, seizures, dizziness, blurred vision, weight gain, etc. Did you know that Whole Foods will not sell any products that contain Splenda?

Although today was going to be a busy one, I knew I needed to get out and walk at least a little. So, I got just a measly three miles in. I hadn't gone very far when I met up with a young man walking a yellow lab puppy. It was just 15 weeks old and quite adorable. And, guess what? His name is Marley. Marley was FULL of energy as puppies usually are and I said to his owner "you've got a lot ahead of you!" He told me he has four young children at home and I replied that's good as they could all wear each other out!

I was also pleasantly surprised to see that a neighbor near my house has done a yard renovation and it looks terrific. Seems like most of the yards on our street have been turned in to "gardens" and that sure makes it nice for walking.

I did stop by the house and got Bogie, my four legged trainer to go with me for the rest of the way. He just loves to walk and that is motivating enough for me too!

Read the newspaper early this a.m. and saw where rain is expected this weekend. So, I figured I'd better get a good, long training walk in today. I was successful in procrastinating until after lunch. I started out great with impressive winds nudging me on for the first mile. I remember thinking about the Irish saying "May the Wind always be at Your Back" and thinking this walk would be a piece of cake. Well, the winds changed and for the rest of the day, the wind was whipping in my face peeling my eyelids back! I walked to Crull Fitness and bought another bottle of water then walked on to my friend Doug's house for a visit. I finally got to meet his super sweet little rescue dog that is as calm as they come. After that, I walked on to the post office and mailed some thank you notes for donations from wonderful friends supporting my walk efforts. Then, I made my way home for a total 10.5 mile walk. Got home in time to take a shower and head to the Hyatt for the Richardson Chamber of Commerce's annual banquet. Kay Bailey Huchison was the keynote speaker and she shared some poignant thoughts about the stimulus plan under considaration this weekend. She was actually on the Senate floor at 1:00 p.m. and made it to speak at the banquet at 7:30 p.m. Wow... Thoroughly enjoyed the event as usual.

Healthy Ideas: Dr. Andrew Weil was quoted as saying that if you had to pick just one thing to stay healthy, you should choose breathing exercises. From his website: "Practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders." Here is a link to his breathing instructions (I regularly use Exercise #2) http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART00521/three-breathing-exercises.html So, why not give it a go? What have you got to loose except stress and high blood pressure?

Met up with Janie at 8:30 a.m. at Crull Fitness. Julian our trainer asked if we were sore from Tuesday and we screwed up and said "no". Darn it.... we shoulda said yes, as that meant he was going to work us even harder. As he says with a grin.... 25 more repetitions. Easy for him to say, huh? I told him I was gonna bring a camera next time so I could post his photo next to ChaChi's. When I got home, I decided to get some walking training in as I hadn't walked since getting the headcold. So, sneakers on, water bottles filled and sidewalks calling, I went on a 5 mile jaunt. The weather was great and my feet and legs felt great too!

Met Janie at Crull Fitness at 8:30 a.m. At 8:31 a.m. we were back on track, or should I say treadmill warming up for our hour and a half of fitness training. It was a good albeit uneventful workout.

Sunday, February 1, 2009

At 9:00 a.m. this morning, I finally rejoined the human race. After two and a half days, extra probiotics, vitamin D and gallons of hot Tulsi tea, I have declared victory over my head cold. Well, almost. OK... 90%... well... maybe. Tomorrow I may take a short 3 mile walk to get my feet warmed up for a longer walk. Tuesday, it's back to Crull Fitness for more torture...err... I mean toning and exercise! ha.

Friday, January 30th
I had intended to talk a 9 mile walk today, but instead woke up like I had been run

over by a freight train. Actually, it was a full blown head cold. So, I stayed in bed all day with my box of kleenex.

Tuesday, January 27th

I met up with Janie at Crull Fitness at 9:00 a.m. We had a great work out with Julian as usual. With all of the unique and challenging exercises Julian comes up with, surely there will be an end to the soreness I wake up the morning after each session!

Friday, January 23 - Sunday, January 25
My buddy Ruth Ann and I drove to Houston for the Avon Walk's Great Start Party. It was held at MD Anderson on Saturday. We met lots of walkers and also crew volunteers for the walk. One lady is either walking or volunteering in all nine Avon Walks throughout the U.S. this year. Now THAT is a commitment to the cause! I also met three nice ladies who will be at rest stop number 5 for my Houston walk. I don't remember their names, but I will surely recognize them by their enthusiasm and energy!

And, since neither Ruth Ann or I had ever been to MD Anderson, it was nice to finally see the awesome sprawling medical campus we have always heard so much about. Overall, it was a good trip for us to take so we could spend time together and also for such a great cause. I had my first lumpectomy in 1999 and Ruth Ann had her first mastectomy in 2003. Then, on 10/3/06, Ruth Ann had her second mastectomy and just 16 days later, I had my bi-lateral mastectomy. As much as I hated us both having breast cancer at the same time, we made the best of it. I was at the hospital for her surgery and she came to mine. As the song says "that's what friends are for".

Our hotel overlooked the Galleria and on Saturday evening, we went window sticker shock shopping. Saw a stunning leather purse at Saks for $3,800 and no, it didn't come home with me! We also strolled through Dior, Armani, Burberry, Coach and others... mostly wide -eyed!

On Sunday, we lucked on the weather. Although it was overcast, not a single drop of rain for the entire drive back to Dallas. We even stopped at the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana. Ruth Ann bought goodies to take to her husband and I bought stuff for Janie who was dogsitting and for Richard and our Italian exchange student Umbi. Too bad I can't eat the wonderful breads and pastries I brought home was diagnosed dairy and gluten intolerant two years ago. My almonds, applies and bananas are good, but just not the same...

I must get back to Crull Fitness and get moving pronto!

Took the day off today to set up our newest computer. And to recuperate from yesterday's workout at Crull Fitness! More muscles are having a "great awakening" creaking and groaning.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
Started the day at Crull Fitness Center. Julian had Janie and I walking, stretching and lifting for 90 minutes non-stop. I have now had four workout sessions and every time so far, the training has been different (except for stretching).... I can hardly wait to see what he dreams up for next Tuesday!

Well, I have to admit that it was just too darn cold to walk outside this a.m. I think the temperature was 28 degrees. So, I drove over to Crull Fitness and walked on the treadmill for an hour and a half. Even with my MP3 player going and also watching a news channel on the TV in front of me, I have to admit it was BORING. But, I did get 6 miles in followed by stretching.

I got home in time to take a shower and head out the door again. I went to a new hairdresser and got a 2 Day "do" .... meaning a really really short haircut. I actually like it, but think I'll like it a bit better when it grows out a little. In the meantime, it will sure be easy to take care of, especially as I train for this 39 mile walk. I have to say Richard was sure surprised! He was kind and said he likes my new "do" though. As I'm apt to say, it's just hair. Even when I lost most of my hair in 1987 during my radiation treatments, it really didn't bother me much. Obviously, I'm not normal. (But then all who know me, know that!)

This morning, Janie and I met Julian (a.k.a. Chachi) at Crull Fitness around 9:30 a.m. This time, Julian kicked the workout up a notch.... I told Julian that he needed to know that he is not in my Last Will & Testament, so there is no benefit to killing me with exercise! No doubt that after a few months of training with the big bad wolf, we will be able to huff and puff and blow the house down! Actually, Julian is a nice young man who knows how to keep us moving with a smile. (well, yeah, it's easy for him to smile since WE'RE the ones sweating!)

Last week, I got an email from one of my Los Angeles Breast Cancer 3 Day friends, D'Lyn. She has a friend that is making a breast cancer quilt as a fundraiser from breast cancer t-shirts and was looking for shirt donations. So, I rooted throught my stash and found a few that were in good enough shape to send and got them in the mail just before the post office closed yesterday. I can't wait to see what the finished quilt will look like... D'Lyn says she's received alot of really unique shirts for her to use. How cool is that?

Monday, January 12, 2009

While I had good intentions, I must confess that I skipped walking to the library today. But, I have a good excuse. Instead, I walked to The Corner Bakery and had lunch with three of my 2007 Breast Cancer 3 Day teammates, Alice, Robyn and Laurie. It has been quite awhile since we have been able to visit and catch up on the latest.

I mentioned to them that I am now working out at Crull Fitness once a week as part of my cross training. And, I told them that I am looking for a bicycle to ride to Crull to further cross train. It is just 4 miles each way, but that would eat up much of my day to walk that when added to a workout. Alice offered the loan of her bike and I think I might just take her up on her offer!

Not that you were wondering, but I thought I'd let you know that my new sneakers are like walking on air. Life is good.

I started out pretty darn lazy this morning. Three cups of Tulsi (holy basil) tea & a date with the Sunday newspaper. Around 10:00 a.m., I finally decided it was time to get moving, so I put my sneakers on and took a hike around the neighborhood. It was sunny and cool, maybe 42 degrees which is just about perfect for walking. I logged three miles by the time I got back home. It was an uneventful walk but I did see a neighbor outside taking down his Christmas decorations and a Christmas tree at the curb of another neighbors house for city pickup tomorrow. I suppose Christmas is officially over.

According to the training schedule, I need to walk five miles tomorrow... a nice & easy distance to start the week. I might just walk to the library and see what new books are on the shelves. Maybe I'll learn something new... what a nice thought.

Quote for the day:
"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." ~ Sir Winston Churchill

Saturday, January 10
After evaluating my athletic shoes, I decided I really needed a new pair to train in for this walk. (It's important to train in the shoes you are going to use in the walk.) Since I have pretty big feet... oh all right, monster-size 11 feet, the pickings are usually slim. I did try on eight different pairs and finally chose a fairly plain pair of Avia sneakers. Actually, they are running shoes. But, when I was growing up in the 1960's and early 1970's, we called 'em sneakers. And, they were usually Keds my mom bought for me from Sears. Now, there are a zillion different brands, styles and colors to choose from; how times have changed.

The Great Awakening!

Today was "the great awakening". I feel like a bear that left the cave after winter hibernation. Janie and I checked in at Crull Fitness Center at 10:00 a.m. and Julian, our personal trainer, got us moving at 10:01! Julian looks alot like Chachi from the TV show Happy Days, no kidding! (Actually, he does look like a kid, but then to me, anyone under the age of 30 looks like a kid to me!)

For the next hour an a half, Julian had us both moving, up and down, back and forth from machine to machine and my old muscles creaked and groaned and sputtered to life like a piece of antiquated equipment. I remember mumbling something about "evil" when he said 20 more reps.. But, it felt great and I left with no doubts that I really am on my way to getting fit for this 39 mile walk. Since my Avon training guide suggests cross training weekly, I've decided to meet up with Janie (and Chachi) on Tuesday mornings. Think I'll go plop myself down in the jacuzzi for awhile.... stay tuned.

One more thing I want to share with you:

Yesterday afternoon, I went to Terrace Elementary School to judge a spelling bee. I was quite taken with the words that were on the tote bag of a 5th grade contestant, so I took this picture to share with all of you. What a nice surprise from a wee one, eh?

(p.s. The spelling bee was great fun!)
It's official..... I started my training off with a bang this morning... well, maybe not exactly a bang, that would be a bit of a stretch. Actually, it was a stretch, as you see, I went to yoga.

I hate to admit it, but it's been a looong time since I've been to yoga. When I went to class this morning, Bharati Amin, our yoga instructor had a huge smile on her face when she saw me. Maybe I was missed! The good news is that I enjoyed the hour and half immensely... the bad news is that I have regressed alot during my yoga hiatus. Rubber bands, licorice sticks and marshmallows are flexible... I was not. Well, maybe a little... sort of like a stale marshmallow, you know... ha.

Having done the Breast Cancer 3 Day in 2007, I know I must add another cross training activity to my program. So, yesterday, I went to Crull Fitness on Custer Parkway in Richardson and met with the owner, Al Coseglia. I have driven by Crull since it opened maybe a year ago but hadn't been inside. Crull is a state-of-the-art fitness center with the latest machines and a full staff to work with you. I meet with a personal fitness instructor tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and together, we'll figure out the best routine to target different muscles than those I use when I walk. This is important to keep from getting muscle pulls, strains and sprains. None of which I need! And, the good news is that my friend Janie is going to go work out regularly with me. I have a friend that is willing to sweat with me. Neat-o. I will no doubt, be keeping you up-to-date on how this goes!

Fundrasing Update: $475.00 so far. Just $1,325.00 more to go!

Here I go Again!

OK... maybe I am a bit crazy.... I've been accused of worse things! The Houston Avon Walk for breast cancer will be held in April and I've decided it's time for me to get out and get moving! So, I recently signed up for this 39 miles cancer walk and will be starting my training shortly.

First, let me offer an outrageously huge and truly heart-felt thanks to everyone who supported me during the Breast Cancer 3 Day two years ago. Both the money donations and the encouraging words got me through those loooong training months. On the days it snowed, rained or was sweltering hot, getting emails, honks and waves really kept my spirits up. And, the training paid off. Both for the money I raised for cancer research and for my feet (I didn't get one blister... how amazing is that? At least something on me works right!).

So, stay tuned as I will be updating my blog regularly. I walk for you. Lois

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Let's see, since last February when I signed up for the Breast Cancer 3 Day, I've walked 713 training miles, found 1.71 in coins on my walks, started Yoga classes, learned some water aerobic maneuvers, walked all 60 miles of the 3 Day, got to help with a TV commercial, made many memories and added a bunch of new friends to my buddy list... wow....

And, now, I dedicate these words from the song "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts to all of you....

I hope that the days come easy and the moments pass slow,
And each road leads you where you want to go,
And if you're faced with a choice, and you have to choose,
I hope you choose the one that means the most to you.
And if one door opens to another door closed,
I hope you keep on walkin' till you find the window,
If it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile,

But more than anything, more than anything,
My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to,
Your dreams stay big, and your worries stay small,
You never need to carry more than you can hold,
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to,
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too,
Yeah, this, is my wish.

I hope you never look back, but ya never forget,
All the ones who love you, in the place you left,
I hope you always forgive, and you never regret,
And you help somebody every chance you get,
Oh, you find God's grace, in every mistake,
And you always give more than you take.

This is my wish.

Till our paths cross again.... believe in tomorrows and keep the Faith ~

Friday, Nov. 2 ~ Monday, Nov. 5th
(Photo Montages are at the End of the Post)

What a trip it was! A bunch of us left from Dallas on Friday morning and caught up with the other dozen or so at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Valencia in the early evening. This hotel had literally just opened the day before. What a treat it was to be the first to stay in these suites; everything was brand new. I even had to take the plastic cover off the plug of the coffee maker to use it!

Besides still not quite believing I was one of the chosen to participate in this TV commercial for the Komen 3 Day, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I, along with 6 others, got to play on Saturday. We rented a Mercedes (you know that old saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do"!).... and took off to stroll around Beverly Hills and also Hollywood. I had been there many years before, and enjoyed getting to see it all again.

Sunday, just about everyone was on the location for the whole day. And, as we had suspected, there was lots of waiting around until you are needed for something. But, the weather was as gorgeous as our surroundings. And, we were fed non-stop again! An extension of the 3 Day "all you can eat buffet" we all enjoyed in Dallas the weekend before. Except this time, the food was exceptionally good and there was just a huge variety of stuff to choose from.
Heck, they even had bubble gum (and yeah, that's were I got the idea to have a bubble blowing contest with Cissa!).

We all got a big kick out of being referred to as "the talent" with many quips and smiles about it shared throughout the weekend.

It was a weekend of fun, laughter and for many of us the freedom to let our tears fall as we shared our memories. It was also healing for some, closure for others and a way to put the pieces of our experiences together.

As many of you know, I carried Faith with me all sixty miles of the 3 Day in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Jekot and in support of all breast cancer survivors. And, I took Faith with me on this trip as well. How could I finish this experience without Faith?

I also need to mention Stephanie, a very special cancer survivor in our group. Stephanie and her 15 year-old son David participated in the Dallas 3 Day; Stephanie was unable to walk because of her treatments and health, but she was there as an event photographer and David walked the 60 miles in support of her. As soon as you meet Stephanie, it is just darn near impossible not to rally around her. Her spirit, courage and attitude are an inspiration to all. On Sunday, "the talent" (all of us) signed a pink victory 3 Day shirt for Stephanie and as I was signing the shirt, I knew what I had to do. I decided that Stephanie could use Faith as she continues on her journey. So, Faith went home on Monday morning with Stephanie.

Denise is another amazing woman. Her breast cancer was diagnosed three years ago and given her fourteen trips to the operating room, her road has indeed been a rocky one. Even so, she exudes strength, beauty, determination and also peace. Denise, you now have a whole new bunch of friends rooting for you as you prepare for your upcoming surgery.

It was a bit hard to say final goodbyes at the airport, but we have all vowed to keep in touch. We've even decided to form our own team for next year's 3 Day in Dallas "Team Talent". Gotta nice ring to it, doesn't it?

And, it will be fun to see the final commercial sometime early next year. I also realize that with two days of filming and thousands of photographs taken of all of us, I won't be a bit surprised if I don't appear in any of the final media. But, just as with the 3 Day, it's all about being part of the experience. And, knowing that by helping keep the momentum going, maybe I have made a difference.

I MADE IT ALL 60 MILES!
Zipedeedodah!!!

It was an incredible three days!! First, I thought I'd share the photos I took (just double click on the middle arrow...do turn your sound on too!).

I should also take a moment to explain the lamb. Her name is F.A.I.T.H. and it stands for Friends Always In The Heart. Dr. Elizabeth Jekot of the Elizabeth Jekot Breast Imaging Center here in Richardson gives one of these special lambs to each patient she diagnoses with breast cancer. And, this is actually my 2nd lamb. She gave me one in 1999 when I got my first breast cancer diagnosis. But, I gave that one to a friend who was diagnosed around 2004 or so. This Faith came into my life a year ago when Dr. Jekot diagnosed my breast cancer recurrence.

Dr. Jekot's imaging center is state-of-the-art and you know it is a very special place from the moment you walk through the front door. It is easy to see that it was designed with the patient in mind. And, her imaging center was listed as one of the top five in the country this past year. Dr. Jekot is also a breast cancer survivor (along with two of her sisters and her mother), so she understands the disease from both sides.

Anyway, I decided from the start that I would take F.A.I.T.H. on my three day journey. She rode all 60 miles with me.... what a trouper. And, I did tell Dr. Jekot via cell phone that I was keeping the Faith!

Last Thursday, I went to Southfork to rehearse the opening ceremonies (a.k.a. the drama club :o) Even though it didn’t take long, I was glad we did a run through. After leaving there, I drove straight to Gilda’s Club to listen to my breast oncologist, Dr. Joyce O’Shaughnessy speak about the latest information on breast cancer treatments. It was the first time I’ve heard her speak and believe me, she really knows her stuff. I learned so much that evening; I was taking notes as fast as I could write. It was one of the times I wish I knew shorthand!

Thursday night I felt a bit anxious about the 3 Day. It seemed like I had trained forever (well, maybe not forever exactly, but 8 ½ months!) and now it was time to get out there give it my best shot. I wondered if I could really do this and it was now time to find out. You know, “walk the talk” as they say.

Friday morning, I got up before the roosters… around 4:00 a.m. I wanted enough time to shower, eat a hot bowl of oatmeal, pack my back sack and leave for Southfork by 5:30 a.m. Since I was part of opening ceremonies, I sure didn’t want to be late!

Opening ceremonies are a fond, yet emotional memory for me now. There were words of remembrance, encouragement, purpose and camaraderie. And, another survivor and I led the entire field of walkers (around 2,400) off to start the event. We truly felt like the Pied Piper ~ what a “WOW” feeling when looking back over my shoulder to see the endless stream walkers behind me.

Our 3 Day route took us through Murphy, Parker, Plano, Richardson, Dallas and Carrollton. Throughout all three days, there were pit stops about every 2 or so miles. It didn’t take us long to realize why some of the seasoned 3 Day walkers called this the “60 Mile All You Can Eat Buffet”!! At each stop waiting for us was water, Gatorade, chips, animal crackers, power bars, carrots, bananas, oranges, peanuts, cookies, cheese and more.

All along our route, we were cheered, applauded and photographed. Strangers photographed us and we photographed each other; the Kodak moments were endless! We passed homes where people sat in their yards waving, passing out candy, singing, clapping, blowing bubbles and yelling “thank you for walking!” at us. Oh yes, there were also a zillion dogs along the route in all shapes, sizes and colors (kinda like us walkers :o)

There was one black lab in particular that would bark every time his master clapped. A real hoot to watch. Wonder how he trained him to do that?

And, as I was apt to often say in many of my blog postings "training still makes cents"... I found 3 pennies on my walk. Let's see three pennies found on the 3 Day... coincidence? I think not! That makes a grand total of $1.66 since I started training last February. I did give one of my 3 Day pennies to my 3 Day coach, Cindy Donovan just after finishing all 60 miles. She has been a great coach and was always there for me. Cindy, you're the greatest!

And, the port-o-potties were, at times humorous too. Teammate Alice says she saw a woman come out of one saying “this one doesn’t flush” and was serious! Ahhh, what a sheltered life she must lead. I was in one when I heard a cell phone ringing in the one next to mine… that seemed kind of odd. And, I also remember seeing a lady come out of one with a can of air freshener in her hand (now who’d have thought to pack that!).

I have to share with you that it only took a matter of minutes for me to feel connected to ALL of the thousands of walkers. Without hesitation, we shared stuff from our back sacks like sunscreen… when we needed an extra hand to hold something, one was always right there. Want to take a group picture? Not a problem…. Everyone was so willing to do whatever. I have to say that on the route, I heard over and over walkers asking other walkers if they were OK, how were their feet doing, etc.

In the photos, you'll notice a young Marine sitting with his gear. He and another buddy walked in honor of their family members who had various cancers and for a friend who was finishing chemo for her breast cancer. I have to say these guys are TOUGH. They carried 65 pounds of gear on their backs the first day (20 miles) to camp. The second day, their load was less with the stuff they left in their tent, but was still heavy at 30 pounds each. And, the third day, they toted their 65 pounds of gear the final 17.5 miles to the finish line. I caught up with them on Day 2 and asked one how his feet were holding up in those boots. He said "you don't even want to know". I overhead others saying how they had seen the two men at the medic tents quite often and that their feet were in pretty bad condition. Now, that is beyond determination to me.

The hardest part for me was the last dozen miles. More than once, I fought off tears as I watched walkers in front of me give it all they had to finish all 60 miles. I saw knee braces, taped ankles, taped toes and even taped up feet in flip flops determined to make it all the way. I even walked with one fierce woman who not only had blisters covering her feet, but she also lost a toe nail the day before, yet onward she went.

At closing ceremonies, I led a special group of breast cancer survivors to the special survivor’s podium. Then I was honored to raise the flag signaling the end of the Dallas 2007 Breast Cancer 3 Day. And, yes we hugged and we cried.

Our message was loud and clear. Together, step-by-step, we are moving closer to a cure.

I also have some great news. The 3 Day was casting for a new TV commercial during the event. And, I interviewed actually twice on film. But, I figured with the hundreds of people they probably talked to, I had a slim chance of being considered. Well, guess what? They called last night and so it looks like I’m off to Los Angeles this Friday through Monday to tape a commercial along with 12 others! At least they didn't ask me to WALK to Los Angeles!

So, once again, stay tuned….

Gettin' Ready for Tomorrow
Got up this a.m., jumped in the car and went to the Simmons Cancer Center for a Mr. I. (aka MRI).... however, the radiologist cancelled it but did spend about 45 minutes visiting with me about other types of tests. And, I am going to reschedule the MRI, not for my lung cancer monitoring, but to check out a possible alien in my liver...

I did take a few minutes to decorate a special T-Shirt for tomorrow... hopefully all the stuff I glopped on it will dry by early a.m.... in case its a flop, here's a picture of it. (too bad you can't see how really sparkly it is!)
Gotta run.... I've been asked to participate in the opening ceremonies in the morning and rehearsal starts in just a bit. So there is at least one advantage to being a breast cancer survivor..... you get to go to the head of the line :o)

Yoga Today
Per my virtual 3 Day email trainer, this is the last "official" day for me to train . So, yoga it is.... I have to say that it feels a little strange knowing that all of my training is now over and that the big event is just days away... wow.

6 Miles

Hit the sidewalks late this a.m. With this cool weather, it's nice to be able to walk whenever I want to now. The weather was just perfect for walking... under 60 degrees, warm sun and a cool breeze. I have my fingers crossed that this weekend will be just as nice. Got a few honks and waves from neighbors and friends... always makes me want to go a little further!

Total training miles since 2/28/07 = 713
