Today is Rest ~ No Walking
But, I thought I'd share another story with you about my mountain walking experience a month or so ago.

Mountain Climbing

Last month, Richard and I went to Brady Mountain to go fishing. While there, I walked each morning as I continue to train for the Breast Cancer 3 Day this October.

The manager of the cabins had told me that the walk from our cabin to the marina was just 3 miles roundtrip, but it was a good workout. He said it would wear me out!

Well, I donned my “sneakers” and headed out. The road started out fairly flat and shortly thereafter, I started up one of the many steep hills I was to climb. The weather was just gorgeous; 60 degrees, sunny with white puffy clouds.

As I worked my way up the hills, I got slower and slower and my breathing was exceedingly labored, but I kept on going as I could see I was close to the top. And, after the top, I knew I’d have a downhill respite.

I finally made it to the marina and stopped to visit with a lady who worked there. I told her that I had just walked from the cabins and her eyes got wide. She said she didn’t even like to drive that road, much less walk it.

I honestly didn’t think it was that big of a deal. Well, on the way back, when I got to the top of one of the larger hills, I stopped, turned around and looked down. Yikes… it really was a steep walk! Had I known how high it was before walking, I probably would not have done it.

It made me think of my cancer journey in another way. My cancers have been like a series of mountains. As I went through each journey, I did so with my eyes looking to the horizon and with my body giving all it had. No matter how tired I got I just kept on going.

It was not until I got through each one that I dared look back to see how hard the road had been. If I had known how tough some of those roads were going to be in advance, I might not have taken the trip.
